IBS Key points

1. IBS is a real diagnosis, not just a good guess - tests are needed.

2. There is no link between IBS and bowel cancer.

3. A normal bowel habit is hugely variable and passing some gas is normal.

4. Constipation with excessive straining when passing a bowel motion can be a sign of a pelvic floor muscle problem.

5. Different IBS symptoms respond to different diets.

6. Food “allergy” in adults is rare but “intolerances” are common.

7. Diets for IBS have nothing to do with weight loss.

8. Changing diet AND lifestyle can help IBS greatly.

9. IBS diets are not always easy to follow and do need commitment.

10. Diet may not be the full answer - several different approaches together may be the solution.

11. There is always an answer!
